The Upward Path to Structural Realism
In a recent PSA paper (2001a), as well as some other papers (1995, 2000, 2001b) and a book chapter (1999, Chapter 7), Stathis Psillos raised a number of objections against structural realism. The aim of this paper is threefold: (1) to evaluate part of Psillos’ offence on the Russellian version of epistemic structural realism (ESR); (2) to elaborate more fully what Russellian ESR involves; and (...
متن کاملOrientation Tuning—A Crooked Path to the Straight and Narrow
Neurons in visual cortex are selective for the orientation of a visual stimulus, while the receptive fields of their thalamic input are circular. Cortical orientation selectivity arises from the organization of both thalamic input and local cortical circuits. In this issue of Neuron, Schummers and colleagues provide evidence that the local circuit mechanisms contributing to orientation selectiv...
متن کاملxNTD and the Path towards the SKA
The CSIRO-led eXtended New Technology Demonstrator (xNTD) will test key SKA technologies whilst delivering exciting science outcomes in the fields of HI surveys, gaseous evolution, galactic magnetism, pulsars and transients. The xNTD and its sister telescope, the MIT-led Low Frequency Demonstrator (LFD), build on technologies developed by the Sydney University SKA Molonglo Prototype (SKAMP) and...
متن کاملUpward Spirality and Upward Planarity Testing
The upward planarity testing problem is known to be NPhard. We describe an O(n)-time upward planarity testing and embedding algorithm for the class of digraphs that do not contain rigid triconnected components. We also present a new FPT algorithm that solves the upward planarity testing and embedding problem for general digraphs.
